What is the role of a Site Environmental Officer?
- Have a working knowledge of the international, federal and state environmental legislation and regulations.
- To ensure the site complies with federal and state environmental legislation and regulatory requirements
- Be able to demonstrate that sufficient measure are in place for due diligence.
- Assess, develop, implement, review and maintain an Environmental Management Plan.
- Assist in identifying issues within the workplace that have the potential to impact the environment and manage these issues in order to reduce risk.
- Promote Environmental awareness within the work place.
- Knowledge and ability to respond to chemical and hydrocarbon spills and emergencies.
- Capable of managing the site environmental requirements on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.
In whole terms, the SEO’s primary role and responsibilities are to assist their company and management with adhering to federal, state or territorial legislation and local government/council regulations regarding the protection of the environment. This is done through the development and ongoing assessment of Environmental management System (EMS) and an Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
Note – for an EMP and the systems in place to be effective it must be supported by top management.
Every Australian state and territory environmental policies will differ slightly, so it is important for an SEO to ensure that they maintain currency regarding their applicable state and local government environmental laws and regulations. However the main thrust of environmental legislation is similar Australia wide.
