Plan for a Disaster, Plan Not to have a Disaster!

Six steps in assisting in strategic management planning should consist of:

SAPIRA

1. Surveys of the site by highly experienced and qualified surveyors, the development of risk reduction

2. Assessment schemes to address the identified risks, “aspects”, arising from our surveys. The SAPIRA survey technique is designed to provide the pieces in small enough bites to allow continual improvement and a final result that is the same no matter what the time scale

3. Planning coupled with staff training and forward action plans, helps to build your “Due Diligence Portfolio” to ensure a comprehensive and integrated safe regime. Experience has taught us that no two companies are the same and whilst legislation has forced some companies by the nature of their activities to develop Emergency Plans, these tend to lack teeth in specifics

4. Implementation of the system therefore can take several months but this allows for budgeting and considered management involvement to ensure cost benefit. This is achieved by adopting a step by step approach, dividing large sites into smaller sections, “sectors”, and creating self contained spill contingency plans for the identified risks. Method statements, personal action plans and “person in charge” recording procedures are built in, resulting in a comprehensive on site plan. As with all good management systems

6. Audits are crucial to ensuring constant improvement. Constant review of systems, plans and policies are crucial to ensure that the system continues to remain operational and effective.

Characteristics of environmental management seek the best possible options to promote sustainable development with an emphasis on management of causes rather than treatment of symptoms.

Environmental management depends on scale and perspective. It is an applied activity or an approach that integrates ecology, policy making, planning and social development.
